I hit the wall this week, and my writing ground to a screeching halt. It was a plot wall--a part of the story I thought sounded just fine when I outlined the book turned out to be a complete dud when I tried to write the scene. A whole bunch of questions I hadn't anticipated surfaced and I had to throw the original scene out the window. Too bad, because it actually read pretty darn good. I spent two days trying to figure out how to get around my plotting hitch before things starting rolling again. Can't say it was a waste of time, but it sure knocked my word count goals for a loop.
On a positive note, I had a eureka moment this week. One of those moments where you realize something vital about your writing style. This one was about how I go about expressing emotion in my scenes, or the lack thereof. I've always worked hard at the 'show don't tell' principle but I didn't get the full depth of it until I was critiquing a partner's work and saw a new angle of it in action. One of the many great advantages of being in a critique relationship.
